The sale of these products helps finance tropical reforestation in the poorest parts of the world. Deforestation is one of the largest contributors to climate change because trees are made up of ~50% carbon by weight so when forests are destroyed, all of that carbon is released back into the atmosphere. To address this, Taking Root is fighting deforestation and poverty by developing fully traceable reforestation products with smallholder farmers. New trees are grown on degraded land. Trees are then selectively harvested, creating incentives for farmers to grow more trees. Climate change and poverty are addressed simultaneously when farmers earn money from growing trees. The full cycle, from planting to harvest to woodcraft creation, is tracked.
